For startups lacking extensive engineering backgrounds, the first major hurdle is balancing staff recruitment with budget limitations. Securing funding for initial engineers, designers, and essential production/testing equipment is not just a step—it is the foundation of your startup's survival.
The Hardest Step: Sourcing Chipsets for Small Startups
One of the most significant obstacles in hardware product development is the chipset selection process. As a product manager, you must define detailed specifications before the team can choose the primary chipset—whether for switches, routers, or other platform requirements.
The "Small Buyer" Dilemma
When contacting major chipset manufacturers, new startups often face rejection. Because your order volume is small, suppliers may overlook your inquiries. This creates a frustrating scenario where:

- Lack of Support: Major manufacturers refuse to provide the necessary technical documentation for basic design work.
- Hidden Costs: Even when you find a distributor willing to help, specific cost information is often withheld by manufacturing facilities and distribution centers.
The Alternative Path: Secondary Distributors
Despite these barriers, the path forward exists. You must persist in your outreach until you connect with smaller businesses or secondary distributors. These partners may provide minimal technical documentation, which is just enough to kickstart your design process. This is a critical phase in democratizing hardware entrepreneurship, where smaller players must navigate an uneven playing field to access essential components.
Internal Operations: The Product Development Journey
Once sourcing challenges are mitigated, the focus shifts entirely to internal operational execution. For a team of expert-level engineers, the development cycle typically follows this timeline:
- Design & Development (4 Weeks per Stage):
- Circuit Design
- PCB Layout
- Firmware Development
- Prototype Manufacturing (2–3 Months Preparation): After the initial design phases, a dedicated period is required for preparing the prototype manufacturing phase.
This structured approach ensures that each stage of the product development lifecycle is rigorously tested before moving to physical prototyping.
